PESEL is a numerical symbol which consists of 11 digits. It is granted individually to people in Poland. PESEL is necessary to apply for an identity card (in Poland) or a passport (in Poland or abroad).

While granting for passport reasons, no fee is due.

Those who do not have this number or are not sure whether the number was assigned to them, are asked to enclose to a passport application following documents:

    -  a Polish birth certificate - not on the international/multilingual form (those born abroad need to register first a foreign birth certificate in a Civil Registry Office in Poland).

    - a Polish marriage certificate (those who got married in Poland or abroad – those who got married abroad need to register first a foreign marriage certificate in a Civil Registry Office in Poland).

It is not possible to assign a PESEL number on the basis of a foreign civil status certificate.

In particularly justified cases the consul can issue a temporary passport without indicating PESEL number thereon.
