“Poland and Belarus should build new bridges towards understanding across all areas,” MFA Undersecretary of State Bartosz Cichocki said at the international academic conference “Polish-Belarusian relations 25 years after the Treaty on Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation,” held at the University of Warsaw.

The Treaty on Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between Poland and Belarus was signed on 23 June 1992. “It signalled a new chapter in the history of the two countries, which — facing a fully independent statehood — were able to define their neighbourly relations,” Deputy Minister Cichocki told the conference.

“Poles and Belarusians share the centuries-old, traditionally close relations: we have lived peacefully side by side for hundreds of years, we have a common history, our languages are similar, we cherish many joint national heroes,” said the deputy chief of the Polish MFA. “We should be thinking about building new bridges of understanding across all areas of life: politics, the economy, society, and culture,” he added.

According to Deputy Minister Cichocki, “difficult and controversial issues that have long overshadowed bilateral contacts should not be avoided when building good and partner-like relations.” “Academic reflection on such matters could help broaden the field of compromise,” he observed.

The conference was held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Rector of the University of Warsaw. Its purpose was to mark the Treaty’s anniversary and launch an academic debate on the history, current situation and future of Polish-Belarusian relations. The discussions have brought together scholars, experts, and politicians.
