  • Born in Milicz in 1957, he graduated from the University of Silesia in Katowice (1981) where he majored in Slavic Studies.

     

    Prior to his employment in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was employed by the Ossolinski National Library in Wroclaw, the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Publications and Library Office in Warsaw, and the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Slavic Studies. In 1992, he earned his PhD in Slavic linguistics (liberal arts).

     

    He entered the Foreign Service in 1992 as a senior expert and advanced in his professional career to the rank of ambassador.

     

    He worked in the MFA’s Consular and Emigration Department also as a deputy director (1995). He was deputy director of the Department of Western Europe and director of the Department of Central and Southern Europe. In 1998–2002, he was posted as ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Slovenia, also accredited to Bosnia and Herzegovina (1998–2001). He then worked in the MFA headquarters in Warsaw as head of section, deputy director and director of the Consular and Polish Diaspora Department.

     

    In 2005-2009, he was appointed ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Serbia and Montenegro, and later to the Republic of Serbia. After his posting in Belgrade, he was director of the MFA’s Department of Cooperation with Polish Diaspora. In 2013-2017, he was appointed ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Croatia. After this posting, he was appointed deputy director and later director of the MFA’s Diplomatic Academy.

     

    On 1 February 2018, the Minister of Foreign Affairs appointed Ambassador Maciej Szymański Director General of the Foreign Service.
