“For years, the Red Cross has been Poland’s reliable partner in providing humanitarian aid to those who are most in need,” the chief of Polish diplomacy said after his meeting with Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The two officials met in New York on the margins of the second day of the general debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.

At the offices of Poland’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Minister Czaputowicz and the ICRC chief signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Humanitarian Aid Cooperation. The Memorandum follows up on arrangements made during President Maurer’s visit to Poland last April. On that day, the Polish foreign policy chief also met with the foreign ministers of Ukraine and the Dominican Republic.

On Wednesday, Poland’s top diplomat accompanied President Andrzej Duda to a UN Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and was present during the Polish President’s address to the general debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly. Moreover, Minister Czaputowicz took part in President Duda’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Thursday, Minister Czaputowicz attended a UNSC briefing on North Korea. In his remarks, the minister emphasized Poland’s long-standing commitment to stabilizing the Korean Peninsula, and our readiness to continue to play an active part in normalizing the situation on the Peninsula, also in the framework of Poland’s non-permanent UNSC membership.

Minister Czaputowicz met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, with whom he discussed the possibilities for Poland’s involvement in the UN peacekeeping operations system. Thursday also saw further bilateral talks: with the foreign ministers of Algeria, Morocco, and Mongolia. Minister Czaputowicz concluded his visit by meeting representatives of the American Jewish Committee.
