On Wednesday, 8 August 2018, the UN Security Council met for closed-door consultations devoted to the topic of Georgia as an additional item on the agenda.

The main reason for the meeting was the 10th anniversary of Russia’s military aggression against Georgia. The consultations were convened at the initiative of Poland, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The participants heard a briefing from Assistant Secretary-General Taye-Brook Zerihoun representing the UN Secretariat.

The UN Security Council consultations on Georgia were followed by a joint press statement issued by Poland, France, the United States, the Netherlands and Sweden together with the United Kingdom, which presides over the Council in August 2018.
