“The Nine format has become a recognizable brand in the field of European security. Our most important demand is equal security status for all NATO member states,” stressed Minister Witold Waszczykowski.

Foreign ministers of NATO’s eastern flank countries (the Visegrad Group, the Baltic states, Romania and Bulgaria) underlined the need to implement decisions taken by the Warsaw NATO summit, including those strengthening the security of, among others, the countries attending the Bucharest meeting.

“The aim of this platform for exchange of views and consultations is not to divide NATO, but to enable us as a group to bring security issues pertinent to our part of Europe to the spotlight,” said Minister Witold Waszczykowski. “Together, we want to help NATO and to make sure that the decisions taken in Warsaw are properly and efficiently translated from political language into concrete defence activities,” underlined the chief of Poland’s diplomacy.

The ministers’ meeting was also attended by NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller.

Romania’s Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu pointed out that the meeting follows up on the NATO summit in Warsaw. “We all agree on how important the decisions taken in Warsaw are. The process of their implementation is heading in the right direction,” said the chief of Romanian diplomacy.

The ministers reaffirmed their solidarity and unanimous stance with regard to Russia’s recent aggressive actions, and expressed their strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. Ukraine should be free to decide about its future and course of its foreign policy without any interference from outside.

When discussing the migration crisis, Minister Witold Waszczykowski emphasized that the European Union should allow the member states to act according to their situation, their potential and possibilities. “We believe that strengthening cooperation with key partners in Africa and the Middle East is heading in the right direction. Only addressing the root causes of migration can be a remedy to the refugee crisis.” He added that the way the member states provide help should correspond with their experience and resources.

The meeting took place on the day of presidential elections in the US. Minister Witold Waszczykowski stressed that the transatlantic relationship is crucial for the Alliance’s credibility. “Regardless of the choice the Americans will make, we will support this bond by investing in our own defences and by supporting US activities to ensure international security.”
