Poland strongly condemns the sham elections organized by the pro-Russian separatists in the occupied area of Donbas on the 11th of November 2018. Poland does not recognize any actions which undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in its internationally recognized borders.

The sham elections held in the territory of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic are part of Russia’s policy of forceful change of the status quo, which is also expressed by the progressing militarization of Crimea and aggressive actions in area of the Sea of Azov.

They undermine efforts to bring about a settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and violate the Minsk Agreements, pursuant to which any local elections in the area of the conflict should be conducted in accordance with Ukrainian law and OSCE standards and under its supervision.

We call on the European Union and other partners to respond promptly and adequately, in a show of solidarity, by strengthening the existing restrictive measures and to apply visa bans and asset freezes to persons responsible for organizing the so-called elections.
