    “The Bene Merito honorary distinction is a token of my deep recognition and gratitude for Mr Ambassador’s work to forge ever closer bilateral ties between Poland and Hungary in the political, economic, and social fields, and for promoting cultural links between our countries and nations,” Minister Witold Waszczykowski said at the presentation of the Bene Merito distinction to Hungarian Ambassador Iván Gyurcsík, who is ending his mission in Poland.

    As the chief of Polish diplomacy emphasized, Ambassador Gyurcsík’s mission came at a time when Polish-Hungarian relations were being strengthened at an unprecedented pace on practically all levels, with credit for this unseen before dynamic of relations between our countries going also to the departing ambassador and the mission he has been leading in such a professional manner. Thanking for the decoration, Ambassador Gyurcsík emphasized the importance of close Polish-Hungarian cooperation in the bilateral and regional dimensions.



    The chief of Polish diplomacy and the ambassador noted with satisfaction that the good bilateral collaboration also has a practical dimension. On the occasion of the ceremony, Ambassador Iván Gyurcsík and Director General of the Foreign Service Andrzej Jasionowski initialled the Protocol between the Government of the Republic of Poland and the Government of Hungary on the Mutual Regulation of the Legal Status of Diplomatic Real Properties.


    Iván Gyurcsík has been Hungary’s ambassador to Poland in 2012-17. He graduated in law and international relations from the universities in Bratislava, Budapest and Brussels. A longstanding employee of the Hungarian MFA, he held many positions, including as Director of Department II. In 2001-05 and 2007-10 he was posted to the Hungarian Embassy in Prague, the second time as deputy head of mission. In Poland, he was chair of the Club of Polish-Speaking Ambassadors.


    The Bene Merito honorary distinction has been awarded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2009 in recognition of contributions to enhancing Poland’s international standing.
