Polish Institutes go beyond the boundaries of Europe. On 17 November, by the power of a decision by Minister Radosław Sikorski, the gala opening of a new Polish Institute with official seat in Tokyo, the first unit of this type in Asia, took place. Setting up the PI in Tokyo comes as a response to the growing interest of the Japanese people in the Polish cultural and historical achievements.

The chief task of the Institute will be to shape the image of Poland in Japan through cooperation with the Japanese media, scientific centres, NGOs or scientific think-tanks. The Institute’s mission will also consist in striving for the presence of Polish culture in the cultural life of Japan as well as promoting Polish language and literature.
Opening the PI in Tokyo is not the only step towards increasing Polish presence in the Asiatic continent. In December of this year, during an official visit of President Bronisław Komorowski to the People’s Republic of China, a Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Poland and China was signed on the subject of mutual setting up of centres of culture. During Poland-India consultations conducted in 2011, also the Ministry of External Affairs of India expressed its approval for the creation of a PI in New Delhi.
