A meeting with the United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, which reaffirmed the strategic dimension of the Polish-American partnership, was the highlight of Minister Jacek Czaputowicz’s visit to Washington.

The Polish and US chiefs of diplomacy talked about ways of enhancing NATO’s defence capabilities, notably by increasing the US military presence in our region and Poland. “We have discussed the priorities of the North Atlantic Alliance ahead of the forthcoming summit in Brussels,” emphasized Minister Jacek Czaputowicz. “We have also shared our views on such major challenges as ending the conflict in Ukraine, denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East,” he added.

Moreover, the talks covered prospects for closer Poland-US cooperation, including in the energy sector, and the most serious challenges facing the international community.

“The United States is our important partner in efforts to improve Polish and regional energy security. These include better diversification of supplies, blocking projects that could compromise security such as Nord Stream 2, and tackling their ramifications,” Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said after his meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Turning to the wide range of problems in Europe’s neighbourhood, both sides agreed that the unity and cooperation of the whole transatlantic community are the key to solving them. The close allied relationship between Poland and the United States continues to play a major role in this regard. Secretary Pompeo thanked Poland for its efforts during its presidency of the UN Security Council.

While in Washington, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz met with representatives of The Heritage Foundation, and with Senator James Risch, co-chair of the US Senate Caucus on Poland, for talks on Polish-US security relations, including energy security and strengthening the American presence in Poland. The officials also discussed Russian policies, as well as Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity.
