I was deeply saddened by the news of the death of Helmut Kohl, a prominent German politician awarded with many medals, including the Order of the White Eagle.

We should not forget the role Helmut Kohl played in uniting Germany after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and his impact on the process of unification of all of Europe. In 1966, he was elected as chairman of the Christian Democratic Union in Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1982–1998, he served as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany – he ruled the country for 16 years. We appreciate his outstanding contribution to the process of unification of Europe, and his great role in the process of Polish-German reconciliation.

I would like to convey my sincerest condolences to Helmut Kohl’s family and close ones.

    Witold Waszczykowski
    Minister of Foreign Affairs
