At the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Warsaw hosted, on March 26th, the meeting of the Arctic Council Observer States.
The meeting was attended by Chairman of the Arctic Council, Ambassador Lars Mǿller (Denmark), representatives of France, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Great Britain, and countries applying for observer status (the so-called ad hoc observers): China, Japan, South Korea, Italy, as well as representatives of the European Commission.
During the meeting delegates exchanged views and information on the Arctic Council’s current activity and cooperation with observer states. The meeting also addressed issues of observers’ involvement in the work of the Arctic Council’s working parties, prospects of their increased cooperation, and the strengthening of dialogue between observer states and the Arctic Council.
At the close of the session delegates underlined the importance of the Warsaw meeting to identifying uniform criteria for obtaining observer status, which was one of the Priorities of the Danish Presidency in the Arctic Council.
