Two relief panels

Two relief panels (Bearing of the Cross and Crucifixion) from an altarpiece at Wkryujście (f. Ückermünde), early 16th c.

The altarpiece was funded by Pomeranian Duke Bogusław the Tenth (1474-1524) for the Marian Church at Wkryujście (West Pomerania). In the late 19th c. it was transferred to a public collection in Szczecin.  From the late Twenties it was on exhibit at the Pomeranian National Museum. At that time the altarpiece consisted of 3 larger and 5 smaller panels and a statute of Saint Peter. It was described in collection guidebooks, as well as other publications, and portrayed in photographic documentation.

During World War II the altarpiece was hidden away, along with other valuable collections from the Museum, in several locations in Pomerania. After some of the hiding places were discovered by Soviet troops, four of the relief panels were removed to the USSR. In 1956 two of them were returned from Moscow to the Museum of West Pomerania in Szczecin (currently, those pieces and others found by Polish authorities are on exhibit at the National Museum in Szczecin).  The missing panels (Bearing of the Cross and Crucifixion) and the statute of Saint Peter were considered lost, and in 1958 were listed in a catalog of Polish wartime losses (D. Kaczmarzyk, Straty wojenne Polski w dziedzinie rzeźby, Warsaw 1958).

The Team for the Restitution of Cultural Goods at the Legal-Treaty Department of the MFA determined that the two missing relief panels had been transferred from Moscow to the Foreign Art Museum in Riga. In response to a restitution request submitted by the Polish Embassy in Riga, the Latvian authorities decided to return the pieces to Poland. The works were officially handed over on March 29th 2006, during a visit to Riga by the Polish Prime Minister.
