Two leafs from a 15th century gradual

Two leafs from a 15th century gradual (service book containing the musical portions of the mass)

According to pre-war sources, the Raciborz gradual contained 166 leafs, of which 19 were embellished with initials. These include the two recovered  from London. One of them, richly decorated with a floral ornament, portrays the founder, Mieszko II the Obese, kneeling before a Madonna with Child. An Upper Silesian Piast eagle, on a blue shield, is shown above his head. A squire, holding his master’s helmet, stands behind the duke. The figures of Isaac and Moses are displayed above, that of the prophet – below.

The second leaf shows the adoration of the Child Jesus (inscribed in the letter P) by Mary and Saint Joseph, and, probably, Mieszko II the Obese with family. Music-making angels and King David are portrayed below, with Adam and Eve lower on the right.

The post-war fates of the gradual have not been determined. It may have remained in the treasury of the post-Dominican Church of the Holy Virgin Mary till the end of the hostilities in the vicinity of Raciborz, that is until March 1945. It was then that Red Army units entered the town, penetrated the treasury and removed much of its contents. However, it cannot be excluded that the gradual was among the objects the Germans took with them when evacuating westwards.

A record of the losses suffered by the library of the Church of the Assumption, compiled immediately after the war, has survived to this day. Prepared on the basis of pre-war inventories, in contains over 1100 titles. The record indicates that the library lost over 50% of its collection, with the greatest losses – reaching 85% - revealed among the oldest works, which included post-monastic Dominican collections.

After obtaining information that two leafs from the lost gradual had surfaced, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (acting through the Embassy in London, with the authorization of the owner, i.e. the parish) moved to recover them. Negotiations  conducted with the person in possession of the leafs, conducted by an auction house, were successful. The two leafs were handed over the Polish Embassy in London. The ceremony of their transfer to the Parish of the Assumption in Raciborz took place at the town museum on June 20 2005.
