Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski after the announcement of the presidential election results in the USA

2008.11.05
I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Senator Barrack Obama for the results he achieved in the elections.

I also wish the President-elect luck and success in carrying out his plans and intentions in United States foreign policy, which will allow the USA to strengthen its leadership among democratic countries.

Likewise, I hope that one of the key priorities of foreign policy - heralded during the election campaign - is carried out successfully, namely the strengthening of transatlantic and allied relations as part of the North Atlantic Alliance.  In the face of serious challenges facing the transatlantic community, including both potential and existing threats to international security, as well as recent challenges to the global financial and economic system, the active engagement of the United States will have a decisive influence on the condition of the transatlantic community. We expect that the policy of the new United States President and his administration will lead to a revival in dialogue among allies and a search for effective solutions in matters crucial for our common interests.

Bilateral relations between Poland and the United States are developing very well. We expect that the new administration, under the leadership of President Obama, will provide our bilateral relations with a new dynamism that will lead to a strengthening and broadening of cooperation in all fields of interest to us. We have a solid basis to develop bilateral relations. We hope that the new administration will make efforts to turn these broad principles into concrete programs and cooperation projects.

I hope that Barrack Obama will accept the invitation extended to him by Prime Minister Tusk and that he will pay a visit to our country in the near future.

On my part, I am interested in quickly establishing close contact on a partnership basis with the new Secretary of State.

I would like to once again congratulate the President-elect and to extend my most sincere wishes for success.

Radosław Sikorski
Minister of Foreign Affairs
