Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the regional meeting of the Kraków Initiative (PSI) in Sopot

2009.06.25
A three-day meeting of the Regional Group of Operational Experts of the Kraków Initiative (PSI) ended in Sopot on 24 June 2009. It was attended by over 150 participants from 38 European countries, the main non-European participants, as well as the European Union and NATO.

The meeting focused on upgrading European cooperation in countering WMD proliferation and effective implementation of PSI goals and principles, with special reference to the tasks of the European Union in this sphere. Ms. Annalisa Giannella, Personal Adviser to the High EU Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy discussed the relevant actions and competences of the EU.

Undersecretary of State at the MFA Jacek Najder, who led the Polish delegation, underlined that the conference should affirm the commitment of European states to the principles of international cooperation in the sphere of non-proliferation. Such a robust joint signal is essential in the face of current threats connected with WMD proliferation.

The Kraków initiative was launched in 2003 by President G.W. Bush. It is currently supported by 95 states across the world. It is primarily dedicated to the strengthening of international cooperation in preventing WMD proliferation. For more information access: www.psi.msz.gov.pl.
