Statement after the death of Kim Jong Il

2011.12.19
It is with utmost attention that we observe the situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the East Asia region after the death of Kim Jong Il. The Korean Peninsula is one of the trouble spots for the global peace. We expect that the DPRK leader’s death will not upset the stability or threaten regional security. Poland as an active member of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, functioning on the Peninsula, hopes that the new DPRK’s authorities will return to the six-party negotiations and genuine denuclearization of the Peninsula.

We hope that after the North Korean leader’s death the authorities will act responsibly and in harmony with the expectations of the international community as well as the Korean people. The manner in which DPRK’s authorities and citizens decide to elect a successor will be crucial for the future of North Koreans and for the security of the Peninsula. Every nation has the right to live in peace, freedom and democracy.
