Poland calls for the introduction of local border traffic with Belarus

Poland reiterates that it has fulfilled all the procedures necessary for the agreement between Belarus and Poland on local border traffic to come into effect, of which Poland has already informed Belarus in the diplomatic notes, dated 28 September 2010 and 13 June 2011. In May 2010 the Polish Parliament ratified the agreement on local border signed with Belarus on 12 February 2010, while on 17 September 2010 the agreement was signed by the President of the Republic of Poland.

A recent statement by the Director of the Consular Department of Belarus’ Foreign Ministry A. Ostrovski confirms that no implementation of the agreement on local border traffic results solely from the lack of political decision in Minsk. We express our regret over the fact that the attitude of the Belarusian side deprives over a million of Belarusian citizens from borderland regions, including residents of such agglomerations as Grodno and Brest, of the possibility of free movement to Poland.
