Information concerning PSI Meeting in Kraków



INFORMATION CONCERNING PSI MEETING IN KRAKÓW (31 MAY - 1 JUNE 2004)

The First Anniversary Proliferation Security Initiative Meeting will take place in Krakow, on 31 May - 1 June 2004. The aim of the Meeting will be to promote PSI and to engage other states in its development. The Meeting will be conducted under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects that delegations (at the level of deputy ministers) from all states that expressed support for PSI will participate (the invitations were send to 85 countries, including 14 members of the core group: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA).

The Meeting will commemorate the launching of the Initiative, conducted by the US President George W. Bush in his speech delivered at the Wawel Castle, on 31 May 2003.

 

•  Organization of the Meeting in Poland is a tangible proof of our commitment to impede the flow of WMD and of the high regard bestowed on the Republic of Poland by our partners from PSI.

•  we expect that the Meeting will have a considerable impact on the involvement of like -minded states in the Initiative. It will also provide an opportunity to promote its goals and values. The Meeting should be considered as a strong warning signal to potential proliferators of WMD and should strengthen the resolve of participating states to develop interdiction capabilities. The Meeting should also demonstrate support of international community for the PSI.

•  The Meeting shall be viewed as an example of success of Western policy in building specialized instruments for impeding the flow of WMD

•  Poland is of the same mind as our PSI partners and considers active cooperation in all aspect of fighting proliferation of WMD and support for the Principles of Interdiction as the best way of joining PSI.

•  It should be stressed that the scope of activity of PSI is consistent with international law and national regulations.

•  The meeting will be concluded by the Chairman's Statement.

•  Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects delegations (on the level of deputy ministers) from all states that expressed support for PSI. 85 countries were invited to participate.

•  High representatives of EU and NATO are also expected to be present.

•  The Meeting will take place in Krakow on 31 May - 1 June 2004 in Slowacki Theatre, Swietego Ducha Street 1
