Operations at the site of the fire in the building at 36 Stasjonsgata Street in N-3048 Drammen have been continuing the whole day. The ruins of the building have been made safe by the emergency services. Further steps to find and identify the victims and to establish the cause of the fire will be taken tomorrow. Accommodation has been provided for the 13 people that have been rescued. They have also been provided with the opportunity to contact a Polish clergymen and have been provided with all necessary help. Cooperation with the local services and the Drammen local authority is assessed by the local Polish diplomatic office as good. Irrespective of this fact, Poles living in the surrounding area have contacted the Polish consul with individual offers of help for those harmed, for example by providing accommodation.
It has been established that 24 Polish citizens were living in the building, of whom 2 were probably in Poland when the fire broke out. A further 13 people did not sustain injuries and were evacuated by rescue services. Two people are injured, one of whom is staying in hospital in Drammen, and the second has been transferred in a serious condition to a specialist clinic in Bergen. The fate of the seven remaining people is not known and they are being treated as missing.
The people harmed in the accident come from the Płock region and are employees of the company Mikos Consens Sp. z o.o., the owner of which is one of those who were rescued, Mr Andrzej Mikos. There were no citizens of other countries in the building. So far, the bodies of two unidentified people have been found. There are strong indications that the number of fatalities is greater and includes some of those people who are classified at present as missing. Information about the progress of work being carried out by rescue services will be sent by the Polish consul on an ongoing basis.
Updated information will also be given at the Norwegian police press conference, which will take place on Monday 10th November in the afternoon at the Drammen Province Police Headquarters.
