Mrs. Anna Fotyga, the Minister for Foreign Affairs is a representative of the Polish delegation at the General Affairs and External Relations (GAERC) meeting held in
Brussels.
The Foreign Ministers will familiarize themselves with the agenda of the Council of the European Union drafted by
Germany,
Portugal and
Slovenia which will respectively hold the Presidency of the EU Council within next 18 months.
Discussions will focus on the
Union’s enlargement process, including the future of the accession negotiations with
Turkey. For that purpose the Foreign Ministers will have a closer look at the proposals of the European Commission from
November 29,2006 as well as at the
Cyprus issue. They will talk about the negotiations of the accession process with
Croatia and will address the future of the Western Balkans countries in the context of the European Union.
The External Relations Session will be devoted to the current international developments. The Foreign Ministers will cover the following issues: the future status of Kosovo, ongoing UN Security Council negotiations in connection with sanctions against
Iran over its nuclear program, the EU contribution to the Stabilization process in
Afghanistan. They will also discuss the current developments in the Middle East Peace Process with particular emphasis on the progress in the field of the formation of Palestinian government of national unity.
