Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski paid a working visit to Hungary on January 11, 2010 at the invitation of his Hungarian counterpart Péter Balázs. The programme included meetings with Hungary’s President László Sólyom, PM Gordon Bajnai, Foreign Minister Péter Balázs and the main opposition party Chairman Fidesz V. Orbán. Minister Sikorski also laid a wreath by General Józef Bem’s monument and awarded the Bene Merito distinctions to László Cselényi and Géza Pörösow, Hungary’s Duna TV Chairman and Deputy-chairman, in recognition of their contributions to promoting Poland’s image abroad.
During the visit talks focused on Poland’s and Hungary’s bilateral relations, the state of preparations to their consecutive EU presidencies in 2011, and the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty with a special emphasis on developing the External Action Service of the European Union. Talks also addressed issues of the Polish-Hungarian regional cooperation as well as the countries’ joint collaboration for the success of the Eastern Partnership initiative.
