On Sunday, January 17, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski held a teleconference on the latest Haiti developments with Foreign Ministers of Italy, the Netherlands, France, Spain (the Rotating Presidency), Deputy Foreign Ministers of Germany and Britain and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.
Foreign Ministers exchanged information on the current situation in Haiti and discussed plans for further relief efforts. So far the European Union and the Member States donated over €21 mln. The Foreign Ministers acknowledged the need for a more efficient coordination of relief efforts and saw the necessity to focus on medium- and long-term reconstruction projects.
Further arrangements on the EU involvement in Haiti are expected on 18 January 2010 during a Brussels extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council and Ministers for Development.
